French Art Deco Macassar Chrome Bookends
€49.00Macassar was a wood used frequently in the French Art Deco period. Its strong, natural pattern was used for high-end furniture and, as here, ornaments and smaller pieces. A type of ebony, it is a very hard wood, whose production has become very limited, and it is now one of the most expensive woods in the world.
Perfectly Modernist, these French Art Deco bookends have mirror-chromed metal arcs that serve to reflect the natural beauty of the wood and add elements of stark contrast—natural vs. man-made materials; variegated, flowing warmth vs. cold, flat metal; dark textures vs. bright reflections.
The condition could be better: the thinner sections of wood have been repaired and there is a little damage to some of the chrome. They could be made 'as new', I'm sure, and the current condition is reflected in the sale price.
